Two police officers attached to Kinjo Police Patrol Base in Meru County have been arrested over the alleged defilement of a three-and-a-half-year-old girl in a police housing unit.

The suspects, identified as Police Constables Nicholas Njagi and James Mutabari, were arrested on October 11, 2026, and detained at Kariene Police Station as investigations into the incident intensified.

The arrests followed a complaint filed by the child’s mother, a resident of Kinjo Market, who reportedly noticed that her daughter was in severe distress after playing outside on the evening of October 9.

According to police investigation reports, the child allegedly recounted that a man she referred to as “Baba” carried her on his shoulders to a house, where the assault is said to have occurred.

Two children, aged seven and 12, who had been sent to search for the missing girl, reportedly found her inside a house occupied by one of the suspects, providing investigators with additional leads.

A subsequent medical examination at Nairobi Women’s Hospital in Meru documented physical injuries, including lacerations and swelling, according to the investigation report.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Imenti Central Sub-County launched investigations, processed the suspected crime scene and recovered two bedsheets for forensic examination.

The investigation also included an identification parade conducted at Kariene Police Station, during which police said the young girl identified both officers as individuals allegedly involved in the incident.

The two officers are expected to appear before Githongo Law Courts, where prosecutors intend to seek custodial orders to allow detectives to complete their investigations.

The case has renewed concerns over the protection of children and the need for accountability among public officers entrusted with safeguarding the public.

The suspects remain accused persons, and the allegations will be subject to the judicial process.
