University lecturers and other university workers have threatened to resume their strike if the government fails to address their outstanding grievances, including unpaid dues and salary-related concerns.

Speaking before a joint parliamentary committee of the National Assembly on Labour and Education, Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) Secretary General Constantine Wasonga called on Parliament to intervene and ensure that the lecturers’ demands are addressed.

Wasonga said the government must settle outstanding debts owed to university staff, while also addressing concerns over a proposal requiring lecturers’ salaries to be paid from fees collected from students.

He warned that failure to resolve the issues could force university workers to return to industrial action.

“The issue of paying our outstanding dues and ensuring that lecturers are paid their salaries from the fees paid by students must be addressed,” Wasonga said.

He urged Parliament to intervene, warning that lecturers could resume their strike if their grievances remain unresolved.

Meanwhile, Labour Principal Secretary Shadrack Mwadime assured university workers that the government was committed to fully implementing the agreements reached with their representatives.

Mwadime said the government was also holding discussions with stakeholders to resolve other contentious issues raised by university lecturers.

He expressed confidence that the outstanding matters would be resolved by February 2027.

“We are ready to ensure that the agreements we reached with the lecturers are fully implemented,” Mwadime said.

The renewed warning comes amid concerns over the implementation of agreements between university workers and the government, with the possibility of another strike threatening learning activities in public universities.
