West Pokot County has recorded the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Kenya, with 25 per cent of girls aged between 15 and 19 having ever been pregnant, according to county-level statistics presented in a chart.

The figures show significant disparities in teenage pregnancy rates across the country, with Migori County ranking second at 23 per cent, followed by Kajiado at 20 per cent.

Turkana and Embu counties recorded 19 per cent each, while Kisii posted 18 per cent. Other counties with relatively high rates include Kakamega, Homa Bay and Narok, which each recorded 16 per cent.

Samburu and Kitui registered 15 per cent, while Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Kisumu recorded 14 per cent each.

Nakuru, Nyamira, Tana River, Trans Nzoia and Nairobi City recorded 13 per cent, while Bomet and Machakos posted 12 per cent each.

At the lower end of the rankings, Nyeri recorded the lowest teenage pregnancy rate at two per cent, followed by Isiolo at three per cent and Makueni at four per cent.

Siaya, Garissa, Murang’a, Meru, Laikipia and Kilifi were among counties recording rates of five per cent, while Marsabit, Kiambu, Kwale and Mombasa posted six per cent.

The chart indicates that the national teenage pregnancy rate stands at 12 per cent, highlighting the continued challenge of teenage pregnancies in several parts of the country.

The statistics measure the percentage of women aged 15 to 19 who have ever been pregnant, rather than the number of pregnancies recorded within a particular year.
