Nigeria has confirmed one case of Ebola disease in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, with health authorities identifying and monitoring 53 contacts linked to the patient.

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) situation report dated October 24, 2026, the confirmed case involves a 42-year-old woman who returned to Abuja from Uganda through Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on October 3.

The patient developed symptoms on October 7 and sought treatment at a private health facility on October 10. She later presented at another private facility on October 11, where she was admitted.

The NCDC was notified on October 19, prompting an investigation and sample collection. Laboratory tests confirmed the Ebola infection on October 20.

The patient is currently in isolation and receiving treatment, with the NCDC reporting that her condition has improved remarkably.

The report indicates that 53 contacts linked to the patient have been identified, categorised and placed under follow-up. Those being monitored include healthcare workers, domestic staff and the patient’s spouse.

Authorities have reported no deaths from the confirmed case, with the case fatality rate currently standing at zero per cent.

The NCDC said the national Incident Management System had been activated at the highest level to coordinate the response, while contact tracing and surveillance activities continue.

A new suspected case was reported in Rivers State on October 23, but laboratory results returned negative for Ebola, according to the situation report.

Health authorities have also intensified surveillance at the country’s points of entry, with the Port Health Services leading investigations and working with aviation stakeholders to support the response.

The NCDC said 500 laboratory testing kits had been added to the national stockpile, alongside measures to strengthen the availability of personal protective equipment and other essential supplies.

The response also includes infection prevention and control assessments in health facilities, preparation of isolation capacity and public awareness campaigns to promote early reporting of suspected cases.

The agency has urged Nigerians to remain vigilant while avoiding unnecessary panic, warning that Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected or deceased person, or contaminated materials.

The NCDC advised anyone who may have been exposed to the virus to report immediately to health authorities, even if they feel well.

People who develop symptoms such as fever, severe weakness, headache, vomiting or diarrhoea after possible exposure have been urged to avoid close contact with others and contact public health authorities before visiting a health facility.

The agency also cautioned against improvised home treatment, emphasising the need for professional medical assessment and appropriate care.

Members of the public have been advised to practise proper hand hygiene, cooperate with contact tracers and rely on official sources for updates.

The NCDC’s toll-free line, 6232, is available for public enquiries and assistance.
