The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has secured a 14-day detention order against Police Inspector Kenneth Sang, who is being investigated over the murders of psychiatrist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso and city lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu.
Sang was arrested in Eldoret on Saturday and presented before Principal Magistrate Paul Mutai at a Nairobi court, where the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) sought additional time to complete investigations before deciding on the charges to be preferred against him.
The court granted the application, allowing investigators 14 days to interrogate the suspect, record his statement, conduct searches, pursue possible recoveries, facilitate a mental health assessment and conclude investigations.
Sang will be held at Kilimani Police Station, with the matter scheduled for mention on November 9, 2026.
Dr Mutiso, a former director of the African Institute of Mental and Brain Health, was shot dead in Nairobi on July 29, 2026.
Investigators have also linked Sang to the September 9, 2025, murder of lawyer Mbobu. The prosecution alleges that the police inspector played a key role in planning the killing and is expected to face charges alongside other suspects already before the Kibera High Court.
During the court proceedings, investigators told the court that two spent cartridges and two bullets were recovered from the scene of Dr Mutiso’s murder.
A ballistic examination reportedly linked the ammunition components to a Mini Jericho pistol that was later recovered and examined. Investigators established that the firearm had been issued to Inspector Sang.
Meanwhile, the DPP has approved murder charges against five suspects in connection with Mbobu’s killing. They are Rose Mbithe Mulwa, her children Chris Mulwa and Angela Mulwa, and police constables Julius Kipkoeach Cheruiyot and Kennedy Kipkemoi Borboroi.
The additional detention period is intended to allow investigators to complete inquiries into the two killings before taking further legal action against Sang.
