The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) Chairperson, Dr. Duncan Ojwang’ Oburu, has called for strengthened public trust in the National Police Service (NPS) ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

Dr. Oburu emphasised the need for deliberate and sustained efforts to improve police-public relations through closer collaboration between the police service, IPOA and members of the public.

Speaking during the Senior Police Commanders’ Election Security Preparedness Sensitisation Conference at the National Police Leadership Academy in Ngong, the IPOA chairperson noted that election preparedness should be treated as a continuous process rather than an exercise undertaken only during election periods.

He underscored the importance of truth, competence and empathy in policing, noting that public confidence can only be strengthened through institutions that are accountable and responsive to citizens’ needs.

“Building public confidence requires sustained efforts to make institutions more accountable and responsive to citizens,” Dr. Oburu emphasised.

The conference, presided over by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, brought together senior police commanders to deliberate on strategies for enhancing security preparedness ahead of the 2027 polls.

IG Kanja urged the commanders to strengthen election security planning, enhance collaboration with stakeholders and ensure effective management of public order.

Dr. Oburu reaffirmed IPOA’s commitment to working closely with the National Police Service to strengthen police-public relations and enhance public confidence in policing.
