The death toll from the fatal road accident at Kanga area near Mtito Andei along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway has risen to 24 after another victim succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

The accident occurred on Sunday morning, October 25, when a church bus belonging to Power of the Word Church International collided head-on with a lorry-trailer at around 7:45am.

The bus was reportedly travelling towards Mombasa from western Kenya after passengers attended a burial ceremony.

Earlier reports indicated that 23 people had died in the crash, comprising 12 women, 10 men and one juvenile.

Another 25 passengers sustained injuries, some of them critical, and were taken to Mtito Andei Sub-County Hospital for treatment.

Preliminary reports suggested that the bus had been overtaking several vehicles shortly before the collision. However, investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) said improper overtaking may have contributed to the head-on collision, pending the outcome of investigations.
