Kenya’s Office of the Government Spokesperson says it has yet to receive an official report regarding the alleged abduction of Tanzanian activist Twaha Mwaipaya in the country.
The office told BBC Swahili that the incident was being followed up, even as concerns grow over the activist’s whereabouts.
“We have not yet received information about the incident, and we are following up on it,” the office said.
The statement comes after the Tanzanian Embassy in Kenya also reported that it had not received any information regarding the alleged abduction.
Amnesty International Kenya reported that Mwaipaya was allegedly abducted at around 2 p.m. on Sunday in Kamulu, Machakos County, while travelling in a taxi to visit friends.
According to the rights organisation, the individuals involved were travelling in three vehicles, including a Toyota Land Cruiser Hardtop.
Amnesty International Kenya and Defenders Coalition have called for urgent action to establish Mwaipaya’s whereabouts and ensure his safety.
The incident has renewed concerns among human rights organisations over alleged cross-border repression targeting political opponents and human rights defenders.
The Tanzanian government has previously denied allegations of involvement in unlawful actions against political opponents.
However, Kenyan security authorities had not issued an official statement on Mwaipaya’s alleged abduction at the time of publication.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction and Mwaipaya’s whereabouts remain unclear.
