A Nairobi court has granted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) 14 days to detain police officer Kenneth Kipkeboi Sang as investigators pursue allegations linking him to the murders of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso and city lawyer Matthew Kyalo Mbobu.
Sang was arrested in Eldoret over the weekend in an intelligence-led operation before being transferred to Nairobi, where investigators sought additional time to complete inquiries into the two killings.
In its application, the DCI told the court that it needed time to interrogate the suspect, record his statement, conduct searches, pursue possible recoveries and conclude investigations before charging him.
“The respondent played a role in the murder of Kyalo Mbobu… He is to be charged with the two murders. We are therefore requesting 14 days to interrogate him and also to record his statement,” the investigating officer told the court.
The investigating team told the court that a Mini Jericho pistol, serial number 47302127, had been recovered and subjected to ballistic examination.
According to the DCI, the ballistic report linked cartridge cases and a bullet head recovered during investigations to the firearm.
Investigators further alleged that the weapon had been issued to Sang, placing him among the prime suspects in the killings.
The DCI also linked Sang to an earlier incident involving Dr Mutiso, who reportedly escaped an alleged attack by two armed individuals riding on a motorcycle near Junction Mall along Ngong Road on July 7, 2026.
According to the court application, Mutiso subsequently reported the incident at Kilimani Police Station under Occurrence Book (OB) No. 63/07/07/2026.
Investigators suspect Sang may have been involved in planning the alleged attack, although the allegations remain subject to the ongoing investigations and court proceedings.
The DCI told the court that other individuals suspected of involvement in the killings remained at large, raising concerns about possible collusion, flight and interference with or destruction of evidence.
Sang is expected to face charges alongside alleged accomplices who have already been charged before the Milimani High Court in Criminal Case No. HCCRC E004 of 2026 over Mutiso’s murder.
In a separate investigation, the DCI alleges that Sang played a significant role in the killing of lawyer Matthew Kyalo Mbobu, who was murdered on September 9, 2025.
The application describes Sang as a suspected planner in Mbobu’s killing. His alleged accomplices have reportedly been charged before the Kibera High Court in Criminal Case No. HCCRC E019 of 2026.
In seeking the extended detention period, investigators argued that Sang posed a flight risk, alleging that he had deserted his workstation after the suspected crimes and gone into hiding.
The DCI said the additional time would enable investigators to complete outstanding inquiries into both murders, conduct further searches and recover potential evidence before making a decision on charging.
Investigators also requested that Sang be escorted to hospital for a mental assessment before his appearance for plea-taking..
The case is expected to proceed as investigators finalise their inquiries into the two high-profile killings.
