Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an illustrious 23-year career with the Portugal national team.

The 41-year-old forward made the announcement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, through an emotional farewell message addressed to Portuguese supporters, confirming that he was handing over the iconic No. 7 shirt and captain’s armband to the next generation.

Ronaldo, who made his international debut in August 2003, described the decision as difficult, saying it was one that involved both his head and heart.

“It was not an easy decision, because some decisions are not made with the head alone. They are also made with the heart,” Ronaldo stated.

Reflecting on his remarkable journey, the Al-Nassr forward said his time with the national team was about more than goals, records and trophies, highlighting the connection he built with millions of Portuguese supporters across the world.

“When I look back and think about everything I experienced with the national team, I don’t just see matches, goals, records, or trophies. I see people,” he wrote.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner acknowledged the highs and lows of his international career, admitting that while there were unforgettable victories and painful defeats, he always remained proud of representing his country.

Ronaldo also expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, medical staff, technical personnel and family members for their sacrifices and support throughout his international career.

“I had the privilege of being your captain, but no captain walks alone, and you are all part of my story,” he said while thanking his former teammates.

During his time with Portugal, Ronaldo established himself as one of the greatest international footballers of all time, recording 146 goals in 234 appearances, making him the country’s all-time leading goalscorer and a record-breaking figure in men’s international football.

His greatest achievements with Portugal include leading the country to its historic UEFA Euro 2016 triumph and winning the UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

As he brings his international career to a close, Ronaldo urged Portugal’s younger generation to continue dreaming, working hard and creating new history for the country.

He also reflected on the emotional significance of singing the national anthem alongside his teammates and supporters, describing it as a moment when all differences disappear.

“There are no clubs. There are no colours. There are no classes. There are no professions. There are no opinions. There is only one passion: Portugal,” he wrote.

Ronaldo concluded his emotional farewell by reaffirming his everlasting connection to his country, despite stepping away from international football.

“The shirt will remain. The pride of having worn it will forever be mine. Portugal will always be a part of me,” he said.

His retirement marks the end of a historic chapter in Portuguese football, with the legendary forward leaving behind a legacy that spans more than two decades and has inspired generations of footballers around the world.
