The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has warned Kenyans against misleading social media claims promoting cetirizine, an allergy medication, as a remedy for vaginal tightening or inducing vaginal dryness.

In a public safety alert, the Board clarified that cetirizine is an oral antihistamine approved for treating allergic conditions, including allergic rhinitis and urticaria.

The regulator said the medication has no scientific evidence or approval for vaginal use, cautioning the public against inserting the tablets into the vagina or taking more than the recommended dose.

According to the Board, inserting cetirizine vaginally can cause irritation, burning, soreness, pain and discomfort.

It may also disrupt the vagina’s natural protective environment, potentially increasing the risk of infections.

The Board further warned that taking excessive amounts of the medication orally could lead to adverse effects, including excessive sleepiness, dizziness, confusion, a rapid heartbeat and difficulty passing urine.

Kenyans have been advised to use medicines only for their approved purposes and follow instructions from qualified healthcare professionals.

The regulator also urged individuals experiencing vaginal or sexual health concerns to seek medical advice rather than rely on unverified remedies circulating on social media.
