Police and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials have arrested two men found transporting 250 sacks of suspected uncustomed sugar valued at approximately Sh1.2 million along the Kisumu-Busia road.
The two suspects were intercepted last evening following an intelligence-led operation after police received information that a lorry was ferrying the consignment.
According to police, the sugar, packed in 50-kilogramme sacks, lacked proper documentation, including proof of payment of applicable KRA taxes. The consignment also had no visible dates of manufacture, raising further concerns over its compliance with regulatory requirements.
The lorry was being driven by 43-year-old Sample Obudo, accompanied by his conductor, 31-year-old Erick Ochieng.
The two are being held at Kondele Police Station pending arraignment in court.
Police say they are expected to face charges related to possession and transportation of uncustomed goods, as well as importing restricted goods without the required permit.
