United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an end to the widening of conflicts, urging world leaders to protect civilians and create room for diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring peace.
Guterres made the appeal upon his arrival in Egypt, where he said the international community must intensify efforts to contain escalating conflicts and address the growing humanitarian consequences of violence.
In a social media post, the UN chief stressed the need to prioritise diplomacy and peaceful solutions amid rising tensions in different parts of the world.
“We need to stop the widening of war, protect civilians and create the political space for diplomacy and peace,” Guterres said.
He further called for concerted efforts to address inequalities that continue to divide societies, warning that multiplying conflicts are worsening human suffering and deepening global divisions.
“We must tackle the inequalities that divide societies – and stop the conflicts that are multiplying human suffering and pushing an already unequal world further apart,” he added.
Guterres’ remarks underscore growing calls for stronger international cooperation to prevent the escalation of armed conflicts, safeguard civilian populations and address the underlying social and economic inequalities that can fuel instability.
His appeal comes amid continuing international concerns over the humanitarian impact of wars and the need for renewed diplomatic engagement to achieve lasting peace.
The UN has consistently advocated for the protection of civilians, respect for international humanitarian law and dialogue as essential steps towards resolving conflicts and preventing further loss of life.
